Carved in stone above the garden door is the date 1697 with the initials ‘B.B.’. This stands for Brereton Bouchier, squire of Barnsley, who built the house of locally quarried Cotswold stone. Symmetrical, simple yet beautiful, it faces south-east, so has the the full benefit of the rising sun. In the 1950’s Rosemary Verey began re-designing the garden and gradually transformed it into its present layout.
