Haunted B&Bs - The Real Haunted Houses

by Heather Holman on Tuesday, October 30, 2007

After seeing the movie 1408 and researching the actual hotel where it was filmed (The Roosevelt), I decided to find some luxurious accommodations where you may experience the paranormal. Where better then a historical bed and breakfast to find a spirit. Apparently ghosts find these bed and breakfasts not only luxurious but also worth haunting... Check out these real Haunted Houses - Haunted B&Bs!

Thornewood Castle

A business tycoon named Chester Thorne spent a million dollars in 1908 (roughly 20 million with today's inflation) to build his dream house. He dismantled a 16th century castle and moved it from England all the way to Washington State. Thorne's ghost still haunts, never leaving his dream home. The staff will find light bulbs unscrewed multiple times throughout the day and one guest said that she was looking in a closet, the turned around and saw a man in a brown horse-riding suit, “What are you doing?” he asked her and then disappeared. She later identified Thorne from a photo.

Miss Molly's Hotel

Known as the most haunted house in Fort Worth, Miss Molly's is a small B&B originally built as a boarding house in 1910. The house has a shady past as it was a speakeasy during Prohibition and a bordello in the 1940s. Many visitors report seeing the ghost of a young girl and have also smelled strange perfumes. Toilets flush on their own and unlocked doors won't open. Some guests have even spotted ghostly apparitions of working girls around rooms numbers eight and nine.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast

The actual home of the 1892 Borden Axe Murders. The murders, which brought fame to the small town of Fall River, were thought to be committed by the victims own daughter – Lizzie. Lizzie Borden was the only suspect in the slaying of her father and step-mother. Although acquitted of the crime, Lizzie acted very suspiciously by attempting to purchase cyanide. Shortly before the murders the entire household became violently ill and Mrs. Borden suspected poison. Mr. Burden's body was found in the living room slumped over the couch with multiple axe wounds including one which not only cut deep in to his skull but cut his left eye in two. Mrs. Burden was found upstairs in the guest room, also killed by an axe. Not only can you stay in the house, but you will be served the same breakfast the couple had before they were killed!
